Thank you for supporting me!

Welcome to my newsletter!

I can't believe this first newsletter is coming hot to your email inboxes. This was something I knew I needed and wanted to do for a while. The feelings about finally doing it range from immense gratitude to you, Reader, all the way to high vulnerability and fear. But if there's anything I've learned over the past 2 years of working my memoir, it's that I have to lean into the fear.

So I think we are due for a little catching up. As you may know, I've been working on writing my memoir, Lonely Girl, for the past two years.

In January 2023, my sister signed up for an email-based month long writing workshop that was meant to take a person from idea to finished book in 30 days. She asked me to join her in the challenge, and I said yes! Little did I realize at the time that the program, while intended for nonfiction writing, was sorely insufficient for writing memoir.

An early version of my manuscript, completed by March 2023, was a combination of self-help and memoir with the intent to show the reader how to find community in a new place and combat loneliness associate with a lack of belonging.

After hiring an editor for developmental editing of the manuscript, I confirmed my gut feelings that I should take out all the self-help advice and move the entire manuscript to memoir, my favorite genre. I became overwhelmed by the amount of writing still ahead of me and put the manuscript on the backburner through the summer.

Life shifted around me and my safety net came crumbling down when my former wife and I separated that summer and subsequently got divorced. I had to reinvent myself as a stay at home mom and felt confronted by the fact that I was writing a book about loneliness but hadn’t disclosed the loneliness I felt in my own marriage. I started to write again with a whole new fervor and mission.

Fast forward to 2025, I’d started a writing business and podcast, The Inspired Writer Collective, gotten into a new relationship, and taken the manuscript though another major (and hopefully final) shift. Now I balance the edits and rewrites necessary to complete the book with my part time school job and running the writing business and weekly podcast.

Cut Stories From the Memoir

For this first issue of the newsletter, I want to share this story that at one point was the opening story of the memoir. I cut it when I decided to shrink down the timeline of the memoir. Instead, I submitted it for consideration to an online literary magazine, Sad Girl Diaries. In April 2025, they decided to publish it, making me officially a "published author".

Reflections on the Blog

Maybe you didn't realize that in addition to this monthly newsletter, I'm also posting to my blog throughout the month. Here are the posts from January you may have missed.

Looking Back

At the dawning of the new year, I took some time to look back over my journal entries. What I saw on those pages surprised me.

Setting A Goal

We’ve all heard about goal setting a million times, and I’m sure we all think we know every aspect of good goal setting. Well I recently met with an upcoming podcast guest, Amanda McKinney, who is a fellow podcaster and accountability coach. Boy, did I have some new things to learn.

Productive Cycle

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked on the phone to my sister and ranted about how I was no longer going to follow productivity advice from men. So many of the habit building books (Atomic Habits, Tiny Habits), business productivity advice, and even workout plans come from people who aren’t accounting for a woman’s hormonal cycle. What do you mean I don’t get more rest days on my period?

Interested in connecting one on one? I'd love to hear from you and get an update on what's going on in your life! Hit REPLY and let me know how you are!

She lives locally here in Salida and even used to be my neighbor! Even though we lived near each other, we mainly exchanged pleasantries. We talked about her ghost writing and editing, but not to any depth. More recently, I mutual friend "introduced" us again, and I asked Laura to join me for coffee one...

Welcome! If you're a new subscriber to this monthly newsletter, you can check out past issues here. ...NOT Easy! Does the transition between seasons throw you off, Reader? It sure does for me! I knew summer time with the added childcare demands and push to record the fall guest podcast episodes would require my editing to go on the backburner...but I'm not happy about it. I worked hard to develop a writing system that worked for me in the winter and spring. Now I have to start from scratch to...

Happy Spring! If you're a new subscriber to this monthly newsletter, you can check out past issues here. It's Editing Time! I'm so grateful to have your support, Reader, as I journey deep into the editing trenches. From the onset, I wasn't sure what I wanted this process to look like, or how I would tackle this major feat. But as I've learned from paddling the Mississippi River, summiting 14ers, and getting through the long days with an infant, the only way to do it is one baby step at a...
